The German drugmaker has been given a marketing authorization for its erectile dysfunction drug Viagra in a trial that has tested its effectiveness and safety in men suffering from it.

“This is one of the most exciting clinical studies in the history of erectile dysfunction treatment to date,” said Paul Eckerd, MD, professor of pharmacology at the University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.
Eckerd said the Viagra tablets are made by Merck & Co., which has since withdrawn from the market in Europe.
He said the EMA had received the drug’s approval and had been working with the companies to try to convince the EMA of its suitability for a tablet form.
The EMA said that the trial involved more than 100,000 patients, including men suffering from erectile dysfunction. It also included a larger number of patients who had suffered from other conditions including benign prostatic hyperplasia, which is the leading cause of sudden and permanent painful erections.
Eckerd said he was concerned that the trial could have been conducted in patients who had never been treated with a Viagra pill before.
“The Viagra trials have shown very good efficacy and safety in terms of reducing the frequency and duration of adverse events and improving treatment outcomes,” he said.
The EMA will be investigating the drug for a long-term trial in patients with ED.
The study, which has been conducted in more than 100 countries around the world, involved 18,000 men with ED and a control group that did not use Viagra.
